What window glass replacement involves

Glass replacement removes a damaged pane and fits a new one of the correct thickness, type and size into the existing frame. It is treated as a priority job: cracked glass at height can fall. The replacement must match the original specification, so the contractor confirms thickness and glass type on site rather than working from a photo estimate alone.

Who is allowed to do this work

Repairing or replacing parts on an existing window is maintenance. HDB states that flat owners or occupants are responsible for maintaining existing aluminium windows. Installing or replacing a whole aluminium window in an HDB flat is different: HDB states that it must be carried out by a BCA-approved window contractor listed in HDB's directory, and BCA defines an approved window contractor as a firm registered under workhead RW01. Warranty

HDB's terms for approved window contractors listed with HDB set a minimum three-month warranty on replaced parts and a one-year warranty on a total window replacement. We require partner terms that meet the current official requirement, and the applicable warranty must appear on both the quotation and the invoice — not be described verbally. If a repair fails inside its warranty period, tell us and we handle it with the partner rather than leaving you to chase it.

Frequently asked questions

Can the glass be replaced without replacing the whole window?

In most cases yes — the pane sits in the frame and can be changed on its own, as long as the frame itself is sound. Where the frame is corroded or distorted, replacing only the glass will not last, and for HDB flats a full window replacement brings different contractor requirements.

Why does the glass need a site measure if I can send photos?

Photos establish what happened and how urgent it is. They cannot give a reliable pane size, thickness or glass type, and getting any of those wrong means a pane that does not fit or does not meet specification. The measure protects you from a wasted order.

What should I do right now with a cracked pane on a high floor?

Keep the window closed and undisturbed, keep children and pets away, do not pick at loose fragments, and flag the enquiry as urgent so it is assigned quickly. If glass is already falling or the pane is unsupported, treat it as an emergency and contact your building management as well.
