What window handle replacement involves

Window handle replacement swaps the operating handle — and usually its base plate and fixing screws — on a casement, top-hung or awning window. It is one of the most common Singapore window repairs because handles carry the whole opening force and their small screws work loose over years of use. Most handle jobs are completed in a single visit once the correct part is identified from photos.

Signs the part may be faulty

The handle spins freely without moving the window.
The handle feels loose or wobbles on its base plate.
The lever will not return to the closed position.
The handle is cracked, the finish is flaking, or the lever has snapped off.

Fixing screws have worked loose or the screw holes in the frame have stripped.
The internal spindle or cam inside the handle has worn or sheared.

The handle is being forced because the real fault is elsewhere — a seized friction stay, a dropped sash or a misaligned keeper.

How the repair is handled

Send a full-window photo and a close-up of the handle and its base plate.
The assigned contractor identifies the handle type and confirms whether a like-for-like part is available.
You receive a written quotation covering the part, labour and any additional work found on site.
On the visit, the old handle is removed, the fixing points are checked and the new handle is fitted and adjusted.
The window is tested through a full open, close and lock cycle before the job is signed off.

Who is allowed to do this work

Repairing or replacing parts on an existing window is maintenance. HDB states that flat owners or occupants are responsible for maintaining existing aluminium windows. Installing or replacing a whole aluminium window in an HDB flat is different: HDB states that it must be carried out by a BCA-approved window contractor listed in HDB's directory, and BCA defines an approved window contractor as a firm registered under workhead RW01. Warranty

HDB's terms for approved window contractors listed with HDB set a minimum three-month warranty on replaced parts and a one-year warranty on a total window replacement. We require partner terms that meet the current official requirement, and the applicable warranty must appear on both the quotation and the invoice — not be described verbally. If a repair fails inside its warranty period, tell us and we handle it with the partner rather than leaving you to chase it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a loose window handle be repaired instead of replaced?

Sometimes. If the handle body and internal spindle are sound and only the screws have worked loose, the contractor may be able to re-seat the fixings into fresh material and re-tighten. If the spindle is worn or the screw holes have stripped, replacement is the reliable fix — a re-tightened handle on a stripped hole usually works loose again within weeks.

What if the exact handle model is no longer sold?

The contractor looks for a compatible replacement with the same spindle type and screw spacing. Where nothing matches, the base plate may also need to be changed, which is why a photo showing the screw positions matters. This is quoted before any work starts.

Does replacing a handle need a BCA-approved contractor?
